Leading Silicon Development Organizations Today

Leading from the top of the organizational hierarchy is less effective every day. As work complexity increases and change accelerates, teams struggle to keep up. We used to deliver products serially. Today, we work on multiple products in parallel, delivering to multiple segments while developing a host of derivatives. The most effective leaders spend time with their teams as they overcome obstacles and support cross-functional integration amid a changing world.

Leaders need to support and drive the design and improvement of work, just as we focus on the technical competencies needed for success. Technical depth used to be enough; then we realized we needed people who could go deep technically and work across functional teams. Now we need to do that at scale, as fast, and with quality, so we can survive and thrive in today’s marketplace without burning out our teams.

Understanding how teams work is key to making all of this happen. Work flows through a design organization like current through a circuit. We need the right registers, a fast, reliable clock, flip-flops in the right places, and asynchronous flows where it makes sense, all without burning too much power. Design your work like you design your circuits; it will serve you well.

Workflow Design

The key that opens the door to success and balance

Leading the design of business process workflows presents a significant opportunity for leaders to stand out and gain a competitive advantage for their company. Many leaders are unaware of its potential because business literature and educational institutions often overlook this aspect of leadership. Effective leadership involves engaging people as they work and structuring workflows to deliver value to customers more effortlessly.

If you look at the history of leadership, it has changed because the world has changed. Complexity and change are why our leadership approach and style need to change again. As complexity increases and change accelerates, leaders need to move from the top of the organizational hierarchy down to the work on the ground. It is there that complexity and change will emerge. Once we see it emerge, we can address it by designing workflows that reduce frustration, increase work velocity and capacity, and enable the foundation to scale. Flow Accel can help you leverage the resources you need to become the Developmental style leader of the future and an expert in workflow design.
